A Tribute to John Battle MP

John Battle, MP, was the Labour Member of Parliament, representing Leeds West, from 1987 to 2014 (apart from a brief spell in the 1990’s). He served as the Minister of State at the DTI (Department for Trade and Industry) from 1997 to 1999 when he moved sideways to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office until 2002. He has been the parliamentary spokesman for Housing, Science and Technology and for Energy at various times.
He has served the Labour Party under Neil Kinnock, John Smith, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In 2002 he became a member of the Privy Council and went on to work as the Prime Minister's special envoy to all the faith communities until the 2014 election. After 23 years as a politician he did not stand for election, effectively retiring from public service.
