John Battle, Labour MP for Leeds West, spoke to a Mock United Nations General Assembly on 7 November organised for Leeds sixth formers as part of the Together for Peace event.

"I'm very pleased to be speaking at the start of this event," he said, "this will reinforce the pressure for a ban on replica guns in this country - and connect it to the international challenge to ban small arms internationally."

"I've seen the damage small arms can do in places like Afghanistan, in my work as a member of the International Development Select Committee," he added.

Oxfam and Christian Aid are organising the event and have invited arms trade campaigner Brian North, whose daughter Sophie died at Dunblane, and Mayor of Leeds Cllr Neil Taggart, as well as John Battle to introduce the event.

But the sixth formers did most of the talking looking at how the United Nations could tackle the deadly international trade in small arms.
