John Battle Welcomes Pleural Plaques Statement

John Battle MP has welcomed comments made by Jack Straw, before the Parliamentary recess, that the government was “actively considering measures to make the United Kingdom a global leader in research on the alleviation, prevention and cure of asbestos-related diseases…”

The MP for Leeds West is currently campaigning for Leeds to be made a centre for research for asbestos-related diseases.

More than 20,000 people have signed a petition urging the creation of a state-of-the-art research centre and Mr Battle believes that Leeds should be its home.

Mr Battle says “In Leeds, at the University School of Medicine and at St James Hospital, not least the Bexley Wing, we have world class research and care facilities well able to tackle the legacy of asbestos sufferers. I’ve asked the Department of Health to set up the Asbestos Diseases Research Centre here in Leeds and to get on with it as we are moving into the peak of asbestos related cases in the next five to ten years.”
