John Battle Re-launches Local People's Forum

John Battle, Labour MP for Leeds West, joins the re-launch of Hawksworth Wood Community Forum on Saturday 10 August.

“I’m very encouraged to be going to the re-launch of the community forum,” said John Battle. “The idea is for the people of Hawksworth Wood to get together so they can work out what they want for their own community, and to make sure that they get what help they need with that. I’m delighted the day’s happening.”

Local people, HOPS, Hawksworth Wood Community Association, St Mary’s Church, Hawksworth and others are getting together with the Council’s Community Involvement Team to map out the key issues for the people of Hawksworth. They aim to use a giant overhead photo of the estate to produce a map of how it is now and how it could be.

“It’s important that the Council and the national Government work as locally as possible, close to the people,” added Mr Battle.

The Forum lasts from 12:00 to 3:00 at St Mary’s Church, Hawksworth Wood, chaired by Kirkstall Councillor and former Mayor of Leeds Bernard Atha. Workers from the local Primary Care Trust, the advice charity VOICE, the YMCA, the Neighbourhood Warden, police and housing officers will be available to give advice and to listen and chat informally as well as to take part in the more structured discussions. There will be a bouncy castle and sports for the younger members of the community.

The day will end with a ‘grumble walk’ around the estate, a chance to mark down problems that need solving.
