John Battle, Labour MP for Leeds West, welcomed
plans by West Leeds Homes to spend £34 million on improving homes
in West Leeds.
The £34 million is being spent in the next financial year, starting
in April. It includes an extra £19 million given to West Leeds Homes
by the Government after they passed their inspection with two stars, proving
they can deliver efficiently and improve each home up to the Government’s
decency standard before the deadline of 2010.
“Thousands of people in West Leeds and Pudsey have already had
improvements to their homes, and this is excellent news for thousands
more who will have improvements in the coming year.
“This is a real boost for council tenants in West Leeds and Pudsey
– warmer homes, lower heating bills, and up to date doors, windows,
kitchens and bathrooms.”
Over 1,000 homes will have new doors and windows, and over 1,000 system-built
homes will have major insulation and energy efficiency works, several
blocks of flats will have new lifts, and over 500 homes will have new
kitchens and bathrooms.
“West Leeds Homes worked hard contacting the community asking what
tenants’ priorities were,” added the MP, “and I know
from my conversations with people how welcome these improvements will
be.”
