On
Saturday 2nd April, 3:30pm, local people were joined by John Battle,
Labour MP for Leeds West, cleaning up Charley Cake Park on the corner
of Armley Town Street and Whingate.
This is the launch of a series of local environmental events cleaning
up Armley’s green spaces and recruiting volunteers for Armley Common
Right Trust, which own 6 parks in Armley on behalf of all local people.
“I’m very glad to launch this series of environmental clean-ups
for the people of Armley,” said Mr Battle. “We’re not
only improving our environment today, clearing up litter and taking care
of our green spaces, we’re also building community, putting people
in touch with their neighbours and with our local history and our common
land.”
A series of Environment Action Days for Armley will take place over the
next few months starting with this Saturday’s event from 10 til
4 and also on Saturday 7th May 10 til 4, again at Charley Cake Park, when
there will be information stalls with an environmental focus and fun activities
for the family. On June 4th Armley Walking Group will take a walk around
all the pieces of land that belong to the people of Armley – making
people more aware of their inheritance.
The events are being supported by West Leeds Environmental Network, a
partnership of agencies and local environmental groups who recognize that
Armley Common Right Trusts need more help engaging people with their work.
