Fuel poverty scheme praised by MP

Latest figures showing that 372 households in West Leeds have benefited from heating and insulation improvements under a Government grants scheme have been welcomed by a local MP.

John Battle MP (Lab, Leeds West) said the figures showed the Warm Front scheme was a success and encouraged more people to apply for grants.

“Far too many local people are struggling to heat their homes, often at serious risk to their health and during times of higher fuel prices. The Warm Front scheme is here precisely to help vulnerable people make their homes warm – it’s a fantastic programme that we should be taking advantage of,” he said.

Warm Front is the Government's main grant-funded programme for tackling fuel poverty. The scheme was launched in June 2000.

A total of £590,719.97 has been spent on improvements in West Leeds so far.

“The figures show that 195 households in West Leeds have benefited from a brand new central heating system or repair to their current central heating system since June 2000. Another 184 households have had their home insulated under Warm Front,” Mr Battle said.

“But there are many people who could be warmer and better off and have not yet applied,” he added.

To qualify, householders need to own their own home or rent from a private landlord, and they also need to be in receipt of an income or disability related benefit. Local residents can contact the Warm Front team on 0800 316 6014 to apply for a grant.
