John
Battle MP laid the foundation stone of a new state-of-the
art health and community centre under construction
in Lower Wortley on Friday (1 June).
He unveiled a
plaque at the site of the new £9million
Lower Wortley Enhanced Primary Care Centre, on
the A6110 ring road, close to the Ringways
roundabout.
The new building, part of a multi-million
pound regeneration plan for health and community services in Leeds, is
on the A6110 ring road, close to the Ringways
roundabout. The centre is set to provide
a wide range of high quality health services when it opens in 2008.
The Hawthorn Surgery and Butt Lane Surgery will relocate to the new
centre, and other services will include a minor surgery theatre, dieticians,
an addiction clinic, community pharmacy and smoking cessation, as well
as health visitors, district nurses, and other health professionals
all based under one roof, ensuring that patients can be cared for in
a modern environment close to their own homes.
Mr Battle
said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to mark the beginning
of work on what will be a first class, convenient health centre. When
the centre opens next year it will transform healthcare facilities
for local people and provide staff with 21st century surroundings to
work in.
“In addition it will also be a
focal point for the area and will benefit the local community as a
whole.”
The centre is one of several opened
across the city as part of the Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT)
programme, a public and private partnership between Leeds LIFT, Leeds
PCT and Leeds City Council. The centre is being built by Miller
Construction Ltd.
