John Battle, MP for Leeds West, pledged his support last Friday to Shelter’s ‘Baubles to Bad Housing’ campaign, which calls on the government to end the nation’s housing crisis.
John Battle joined dozens of other local residents who visited Shelter’s Red House in Dortmund Square, Leeds City Centre on Friday to show their support for Shelter by signing a special bauble and hanging it on the Red House Christmas tree.
The charity aims to collect thousands of baubles this Christmas, which asks people to explain why they think now is the time to build more affordable homes. The baubles will be presented to Prime Minister Gordon Brown to help put pressure on the Government to deliver the affordable homes Britain needs.
Speaking at the Red House, John Battle said:
“As the economic tourniquet tightens more and more people will be pushed into the arms of Shelter desperate for help to get a new home. Shelter’s campaign to build more homes now, couldn’t be more timely. The materials and land are cheaper. The skills are still there and it is a key way to regenerate the economy. I am pleased to back Shelter’s Baubles to Bad Housing Christmas campaign. We need to build more homes so that everyone has an affordable and decent place to live.”
Thanking Mr Battle for his support for the campaign, Adam Sampson, chief executive of Shelter, said:
“Shelter’s Red House gives people the unique opportunity to say ‘Baubles to Bad Housing’ and we thank the people of Leeds for filling our Christmas tree with festive baubles to help make sure Gordon Brown keeps his promise to build the homes Britain so desperately needs.”
