A school that is no longer used by the Council should be transformed
to the new West Leeds Family Learning Centre, said John Battle,
Labour MP for Leeds West.
Upper Wortley Primary School is moving to a new, modern building, and
the old building will not be required by the Council.
John Battle recently took John Healey, Minister for Lifelong Learning,
to see the building, when he visited West Leeds Family Learning Centre
at its current Whingate Road site.
What we need now is more training and more jobs for local people."
The Minister was impressed
by the groundbreaking work going on at the West Leeds Family Learning
Centre, in cramped conditions. He was particularly impressed by the partnership
constructed with local companies such as Elite to provide good quality
training with guaranteed local work at the end of it.
Ive got the Minister
keen, and I am now asking Leeds City Council to look at Upper Wortley
as a new site for a new Centre - to take the work on local training and
job placement in Wortley and the whole of West Leeds forward into the
21st Century.
This is an ideal opportunity
which we cannot afford to pass up. Selling the site for more housing would
be much less use to the community."
