MP gets online with Armley school

John Battle with pupils from St Bartholomew's C of E Primary SchoolLocal MP for Leeds West John Battle joined Armley families at a local school for the nation’s first ‘Get Online’ day last week.
‘Get Online’ day is intended to encourage families of all shapes and sizes to find out what they could do online, and get free help and support to give the internet a go.

Mr Battle attended the event at St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School, where free family activities, a breakfast club and the Get online day Family Web Challenge were on offer.

Mr Battle said: “It’s vital that fast moving technology doesn’t leave anybody behind and inviting people to learn about the Internet at a UK online centre is the best way to get involved. For those of us who are a bit older, we should turn to the youngsters who, from seeing the children today at St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School, are our new teachers.”

Tracie Elliott was just one of the mums John Battle met at the ‘Get Online’ day event.  She explained: “The whole family really enjoyed the Get online day session. I’ve never been to an event like this before and I would definitely come again to further develop my skills and share the experience of the Internet with my kids.”

Zoe Stead, Extended Schools Development Officer for Inner Armley added: “Get online day was all about showing people in Armley that the internet isn’t just for whiz kids – it’s for absolutely everyone.  Luckily for those who didn’t make it down on the day, everyday is a Get online day here!  If hearing more about the internet has encouraged you to give it a go then get in contact with us by calling 0113 395 2357, or find out where your nearest UK online centre is by calling UK online centres main number on 0800 77 1234.”

The event at St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School was one of hundreds of UK online centre events taking place across England to mark Get online day.  The day, which was part of Family Learning Week, aimed to show people how learning to use the internet can help make their family life easier, save them money and give them more time to spend doing things they enjoy.
