| John welcomed today’s announcement
of a new £151 million for the NHS in Leeds, on top of existing funding.
Secretary of State for Health John Reid announced the funding for NHS
Primary Care Trusts in England, totalling £135 billion, for 2006/07
and 2007/08.
John Battle MP said, “This is very good news for Leeds; our funding
takes account not just of our growing population but of the poverty that
we have in our city and the extra needs that means. We’ll be able
to keep on reducing waiting times for hospital visits and to see a GP,
as well as increasing the work on preventing people getting ill by things
like help with stopping smoking and helping older people stay fit and
active.
“In my own constituency we will benefit from a £22.5 million
increase in funding. The Primary Care Trusts, of which West Leeds is a
shining example, are now leading the way in a new approach to health care,
rooted in local access and prevention, and we’re seeing the new
development of medicine in the community rather than the rush to Accident
and Emergency.”
