John
marked Holocaust Memorial Day by signing the Holocaust Memorial Day
Book of Commitment.
“I am very glad to have the chance to sign the Book
of Committment,” he said. “We must never forget. Remembering
the evil of fascism and the Holocaust compels us to fight racism and
anti-semitism today, and to work to prevent genocide happening again
anywhere in the world.”
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on the 27th January
as this is the day that the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.
Holocaust Memorial Day gives an opportunity to reflect and educate on
the Holocaust. We also reflect upon those affected by more recent atrocities,
such as in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and, Kosovo. In Leeds the day was
marked by Lord Mayor Neil Taggart, hosting survivors of the Rwandan
genocide and the Holocaust speaking at the Civic Hall.
