John Battle, Labour MP for Leeds West, welcomed
the Government’s extra help for pensioners with savings.
He said “I asked a Parliamentary Question which revealed that 3,835
pensioners in my Leeds West constituency are receiving extra cash from
the Government on top of their savings. This is as well as the State Pension
and the normal amount of Pension Credit, and was brought in by the Government
to reward those who put aside savings for their retirement.
“It’s there to encourage ordinary people who have worked
hard all their lives to save what they can – this extra money, besides
the interest they get from their savings, makes sure it was worth their
while.”
The extra money is part of the Pension Credit, and provides up to £15.51
per week for a single person or £20.22 per week for a couple. It
is paid on top of the normal Pension Credit limits of £105.45 per
week for a single pensioner and £160.95 per week for a couple.
“I would strongly encourage anyone over 60 to claim the Pension
Credit – it doesn’t involve filling in any forms, just ringing
the free number 0800 99 1234,” added Mr Battle,
“and the adviser will make sure they get the savings element too
if they’re eligible. And for those who are not yet pensioners, it
makes saving for retirement more attractive.”
