John is campaigning for cars to have pollution labels.
“Energy efficiency labelling for electrical goods
works very well,” said the MP. “You get a rating between
A and G, with A very efficient and G very wasteful. It’s very
clear and it helps people choose products that will save them money
and at the same time will damage the environment less. Why not have
a similar scheme for cars to compare their fuel efficiency? And their
emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollution?”
“I took the idea up with the Minister responsible
for road traffic, who told me he would work out a car emissions labelling
scheme to start in 2005 – that was the answer I wanted.”
“I was also glad to hear that the Government is
lobbying in Europe to get an EU-wide labelling scheme so consumers can
see what they’re buying.”
